EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM ASSISTANT

Position Filled for 2008

The Claude Moore Colonial Farm at Turkey Run seeks a summer intern interested in presenting Educational/Interpretive Programs.

The Educational Program Assistant Intern will work directly with the Farm staff and volunteers in the operation of the 18th century living history farm.

The intern will participate in the following programs:

  • Supervisor of youth volunteers
  • Self-guided tours: This program allows visitors to investigate the Farm’s period crops, livestock, and buildings. Members of the “farm family”, portrayed by staff and volunteer interpreters, engage visitors and invite them to help with the chores.
  • Farm Skills: This two-hour program, used by thousands of school-aged visitors every year, combines a Farm visit with structured, hand-on educational activities.
  • Interpretive programs and special events: These regularly scheduled programs highlight the seasonal chores on the Farm, and allow visitors to learn about eighteenth-century commerce, rural trades and recreational activities.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student who will be returning to college as a full-time (minimum of 12 credits per semester) sophomore, junior, or senior in the fall of 2008.
  • An official proof of enrollment must be provided by the intern's college or university.
  • Students in History, Education, American Studies, Museum Studies, or other related fields are encouraged to apply.

Commitment:

  • 8-week internship
  • Must be between May 15 and August 31, 2008
  • 35 hours per week
  • Some weekends required
  • Participation in required events by Volunteer Fairfax; dates include: Wednesday, June 11; Wednesday, June 25; at least 1 of 2 service projects the weeks of June 16 and July 14.

Salary:

Through a generous grant from ExxonMobil Corporation through Volunteer Fairfax's Community Summer Jobs Program, interns will be paid a salary of $2,500. The salary will be treated as income to the intern, subject to FICA and income taxes.
