What is there for children to do?
Children of all ages
enjoy learning at the Farm. Older children imagine themselves back
in time, while helping with farm chores such as carding wool, mixing
Johnnycake batter, weeding in the garden, or hoeing in the fields.
Toddlers take in the sights and sounds and love to splash their
hands in the wash tub, watch the chickens, or gaze into the hearth
fire. Children of all ages look forward to seeing the farm animals.
Remember not to pet or feed the livestock!
How long will our visit take?
Most
visitors spend between forty-five minutes to an hour for their
visit.
How far a walk is it? top
A walk around the Farm
is just under 3/4 of a mile. Walking the whole farm site from the
GateHouse and back, without stopping, takes about 15 minutes. On
Market Fair days, visitors who see both the Fair and the Farm walk
just under a mile. Farm paths are rough gravel and dirt with some
hilly sections, but there are several places to stop and rest along
the way.
How accessible is the property?
All of the paths
around the Farm are rough gravel and dirt with some hilly
sections. Wheelchairs should be able to navigate all the public
paths unless the ground is very wet. A wheelchair accessible
toilet is adjacent to the parking lot. Strollers with small
wheels may have trouble on some of the paths.
Are the animals tame? top
Although our animals are used to their caretakers,
they are not pets and they do not know you. The animals should never be touched, shouted
at, chased or fed.
Does the Farm Family live here?
The
Farm Family does not actually live here but the volunteers and
staff portraying the farm family work the land as if it were
their own and talk with you as if the year is 1771. Their clothing,
furniture, tools, and buildings are reproductions of eighteenth-century
artifacts.
Do you offer tours? top
Your visit will be self guided. A brochure
and map will lead you through the Farm. On your way, you will meet volunteers and staff
dressed in period clothing, who portray an 18th century farm family. They invite you ask
questions and join in their activities.
Do you offer programs for groups?
The farm offers
group visits to the Farm and hands-on
educational programs.
Is there a gift shop? top
Yes - the gift
shop is in the GateHouse as you
enter the Farm. There you will find Market Fair merchandise,
educational items, books, games, toys, collectibles, garden
tools & accessories, Farm posters, T-shirts, postcards and
more. We accept MasterCard, VISA, and American Express.
Do you have a restaurant
or picnic facilities?
We do not have a restaurant,
though snacks and bottled water are available for purchase at the
GateHouse. Picnic tables and a water fountain for your use are located
adjacent to the GateHouse and parking lot. The picnic tables and
lawn next to the parking lot are the only areas where you may eat.
The exception to this is at the Market
Fairs, which the Farm holds three times a year; there you may
purchase 18th century-style food and drinks. Adjoining property,
The Pavillions of Turkey Run, is available for rental for
catered picnics and parties.
What other facilities are there? top
A wheelchair accessible toilet is adjacent
to the parking lot. There is an additional toilet at the Market Fair grounds. There are
no hand washing facilities.
May I bring my pet?
