Volunteer Training
Those
wishing to volunteer in costume at
the Farm, either during the Market Fairs or at the 18th century
farm site, must complete a minimum of required training. To begin
the training process, contact the Farm at 703-442-7557 or email
kjackson@1771.org.
For those wishing
to volunteer at Market Fairs,
the requirement is as follows:
- Read a packet of information on the 18th century and how the
Claude Moore Colonial Farm presents it to the public
- Complete 10 hours of behind-the-scenes volunteer work
- Be 12 years of age or older to volunteer; anyone under 12 must
be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
For those wishing
to volunteer at the Market Fairs
and the 18th century farm site,
the requirement is as follows:
- Attend 1 training session
- Read a packet of information on the 18th century and how the
Claude Moore Colonial Farm presents it to the public
- Complete 2 days of observation on the 18th century farm site;
the first in modern clothes, the second in period costume
- Be 18 years of age or older, or under age 10 and accompanied
by a parent or guardian. Anyone between the ages of 10 and 17
must join the Apprentice Program
in order to volunteer on the 18th century farm site. (Anyone may
volunteer just at the Market Fairs; if interested, see above.)
If you are already
a costumed volunteer at the Farm, you are welcome to come to any
of the trainings; please RSVP to the email address above.

18th Century Clothing
This will cover the basic clothing items: shirts, trousers,
waistcoats, caps, kerchiefs, shifts, petticoats, shortgowns,
and aprons. Come trace a pattern, examine examples of garments,
and have your sewing questions answered by our staff. You
may also purchase 100% linen cloth from the Farm or have your
own fabric approved for use on the farm site. Even if you
do not plan to make your own 18th-century clothing, this is
an excellent opportunity to learn more about who wore what
in the 18th century and why they wore it! Reservations
required.

18th Century Dancing
Dance the night away! We will teach you a
few of the simpler dances of the time, plus how to bow,
curtsey, and flirt in public. Reservations required.

First-Person Interpretation
This will cover the art of First Person Interpretation.
Topics will include Character Development, 18th Century
Language, and an open discussion about the tricks of the

Colonial Ceramics
Enjoy an interactive presentation on 18th century
pottery. Learn the differences in glazes, shapes and sizes
of ceramics that were used in the 1700s. Reservations required.

Farm Animals
Learn the backgrounds of the Farm's historic
breeds of cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys and geese, and
how to correctly handle each of these animals while on the
1771 farm site. This will be a hands-on training; wear something
that you would not mind holding a chicken in! Reservations
required.

Winter Traditions
Learn the songs, dances, stories and games that
18th century folk used to celebrate holidays and enliven the
winter evenings. Reservations required.
